In chapter 3 of our class book, "Everything's an Argument", we learned about arguments based on character, pertaining to ethical appeals; ethos. Arguments with strong ethical appeal is important because it creates a sense of trust and credibility with the speaker or writer of the argument. In order to accept the argument we need to respect the writer's authority, integrity and motives. If a writer has a academic or professional title attached to their name, we are more likely to respect their claims. Humor also establishes credibility because it puts the listeners in a state of ease and helps them identify with the speaker. Reasonable supportive claims also help with establishing credibility.
I finally found a visual argument for my WP1 project. It is shown above. Basically the concept of the visual argument is that when you are involved with drugs your social life and extra curricular activities disappear because you value drugs more than anything else. I really like this visual argument because it is so true and the way they made the ad is so creative and appeals to teenagers because Facebook is so popular these days. This visual argument establishes the ethos character because it involves humor and shows facts that involving yourself with drugs is not healthy by the picture of the guy's face and the "blank" facebook page. It gets the "say no to drugs" message out to society in a more appealing way.
Hey Kristen, did you ever get the previous comment I sent on sunday? Just curious, because I remember posting on here sunday night, but it's no longer up? I may have made a mistake, but just let me know! (:
ReplyDeletethanks!
So I've decided to post on your blog again incase it hadn't gone through. I think this is a fantastic visual! It's visually strong and conveys the message well. This visual also has kairos, it's a very contemporary issue conveyed through a contemporary social network! This is a perfect ad to get across to teens, because not only are they exposed to social networks, but most people are exposed to drugs during their teen years, and being young, they most definitely don't think about how much of a toll it can have. This visual shows one of the many things you loose when you let drugs play a role in your life. I wouldn't say this visual involves humor...to me, it strikes emotion (pathos)! It makes me fear loosing someone close to me that is involved with drugs and it also makes me think about the affect it can have on my life, physically and mentally, and it's a scary thought.
ReplyDeleteAside from having no social activity on the facebook page, I thought it was creative that the profile picture shows half emptiness and being half full (just like the cover shows him destructed and the other half normal). He doesn't exist to the world on one side, and he does exist on the other.
Are you going to be doing the same visual argument just using a different photo on facebook? Or are you going to send out the same idea doing something else?
I think this a great topic that's very important and should be sent out world wide! Can't wait to see your final project.
Hey sorry Stephanie I just saw your two posts! No I did not get the one before. I don't know what happened to it :( Thanks for commenting on my post!!
